Travelling solo? Be sure to follow your passion to travel with like-minded people

Holidaying for solo travellers?

With an ageing population and many people choosing to be single, solos travellers are on the increase. They are you and me and many people in between.

Many people suddenly find themselves to be on their own at a time in their lives when they still have their health, energy and desire to enjoy life. Life goes on and perhaps work goes on and it’s actually okay but the prospect of holidaying on your own may fill you with dread.  You can imagine being the odd one out, long evenings dining on your own, being given a corner table tucked away from everyone else, having to put up with the smallest room in the hotel or going on a dedicated singles/solos holiday with random individuals some of whom are on holiday to find a date, or taking a cruise with hundreds of other people and eating all day long.

Statistics tell us that about one in four British adults has never married or is divorced or widowed. Additionally there are many couples who have different interests and enjoy different types of holidays. They are many golf  and sailing ‘widows’ .  There are some people who are lucky enough to take numerous holidays each year, some with their partners and some alone pursuing their own hobbies. Perhaps you want  to experience a new destination in good company or feel it’s time to do something that’s just for you.

Travelling solo does not have to mean that you travel alone.  If you have a hobby like painting or photography, or enjoy walking or opera, or are passionate about wildlife then think about joining an escorted small group special interest holiday.

  • You’ll be with similar like-minded individuals and couples.
  • You’ll be included and not have to dining alone
  • With a shared common interest, age is no barrier
  • You’ll be well looked after by the escort and specialist host

Most often, you meet marvellous people, have lots of fun and foster lasting friendships.  You may even find a new travelling companion. On a recent painting holiday to Collioure with the inspirational artist Lachlan Goudie,  there was an age range from 19 through to 79 years of age.

Choosing the right  ‘packaged’ special interest holiday.

Whatever your passion, it is important to choose a trip with a professional host and the services of a caring escort.  This will greatly enhance your experience and provide you with the peace of mind, knowing that every detail and arrangement will be taken care of.  Expect to travel with like-minded discerning individuals who share your reason for taking the trip.

Why is there a single room supplement?

A single supplement is NOT a penalty for travelling alone. Hotel prices are either per person in a twin or double room,  or a per room rate. If it is the former then single occupancy is normally charged at around x1.7  of the per person.  If it is the latter then the room rate is divided by the number of people sleeping in it – so, the single supplement is double the per person rate if two people were to occupy the room.  Most travel organisers and tour operators do not add any margin on single supplements.

If making your own booking ask the hotel exactly what category room you will be given. A few hotels in Europe still have ‘single’ rooms – small inferior rooms with one bed, which are not sold to couples. In these rare cases you should not be charged a supplement.  We personally never book these rooms and certainly would not recommend that you do either.
