Safari diary
Having slept in your flat bed all the way you arrive in Africa ready to commence an adventure of a lifetime. After clearing Customs, board your private plane to fly directly to the Masai Mara National Reserve.
A team of Maasai driver-guides including Jackson Looseyia, will be waiting to welcome you at the airfield and drive you the short distance to Rekero Camp. Jackson Looseyia is a local Maasai and both he and Rekero Camp featured in the last Big Cat Diary TV series. Rekero is a private tented camp offering unpretentious luxury and a genuine bush experience. It is one of the few camps located in the Masai Mara Game Reserve. There are no fences so you are literally surrounding by wildlife. There are just eight very secluded and private tents nestling in the riverine forest on the banks of the Talek River. Each tent has its own veranda and is comfortably furnished with two large beds and an attached and enclosed bathroom with a separate flush WC, large safari shower and washbasin. Lighting is solar powered. Hot water for showers is available anytime upon request. Mosquito screens on three sides gives you the option to leave your tent open to the bush and to witness the nocturnal comings and goings! After settling in to your new home meet for pre-lunch drinks and a welcome from Simon. Lunch is al fresco and is served under the shade of trees on the banks of the river. Herds of gazelles or buffalo or families of elephants or warthogs may seen wandering across the plains, and you will almost certainly hear the playful grunts of the hippos in the river and see a wide range of birds and butterflies. Today’s departing guests may join you for lunch but thereafter we have Rekero Camp to ourselves making this a really exclusive and relaxing house party. You can help yourself to drinks in the open-sided sitting room and you’ll be dining as a family at one large table for all meals.
Rekero is as remote and removed from human life as possible, but Jackson does actually have a real office – there is a very discreet internet tent hidden in the bush for those of you who need to keep in touch and a mobile signal has reached the plains!
Enjoy some privacy and chilling out time this afternoon. Tea is served before heading out for your first game drive with Simon. As a special arrangement Jackson will be your second safari guide assisting Simon and greatly enhancing your safari experience. The Masai Mara is undoubtedly the best reserve in Kenya because of the phenomenal diversity of species that can be seen in volume, providing an unrivalled wildlife spectacle and truly rewarding experience - lion and cheetah sightings are almost guaranteed and even the elusive leopard can be found. The plains abound with rhino, elephant, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, gazelles, hyenas, hippo and, to a lesser extent, jackal. This is ‘Big Cat Diary’ country known intimately to Simon and Jackson and so they hope to introduce you to some of the Big Cat Diary characters; Sita (some of you may know her as Shakira), the Marsh Pride and the Jackson Five. Wildlife viewing with Simon is very special. He is deeply sincere and genuinely cares and his relentless enthusiasm is infectious. He is extremely generous in sharing his extensive knowledge of animal behaviour and the interaction of species is extensive. Time is lost when you are out on the plains with Simon and observing wildlife definitely takes precedence over heading back to camp! There will be times of great activity as well as times when you simply sit and wait to see if anything is going to happen. As dusk approaches The Mara takes on a different mood and finally you do have to head back to camp. After a welcome hot shower join Simon and Jackson for drinks around the campfire. Simon is a captivating and riveting raconteur and with sounds from the bush, the warmth of the campfire and a little sustenance he’s in his element! A delicious 4-course meal served with excellent wines is followed by more tales around the table. When you finally retire to your tent you will find it hard to believe all that you have seen and experienced on this, your first day.
Just before dawn breaks tea and biscuits are brought to your tent, then its straight out on to the plains to see what activity took place during the night. Watching the sunrise over The Mara is a magical moment in itself and hours of rewarding wildlife viewing await you. The plains are teaming with wildlife after a night of activity and there’s a good chance of finding a successful kill. There’s no timetable other than natures own but at some stage you’ll be heading back to camp for a hot shower and another memorable lunch on the banks of the Talek River. Afternoons are spent quietly chilling in camp. Re-charged, its soon time to head back out on the plains to see the animals re-emerging from their own siestas. The outside world will cease to exist as you immerse yourself in to the rhythm of life in camp and on the plains.
Out of Africa
One final early morning’s game drive before its time to bid farewell to The Mara and everyone at Rekero. Transfer to the airstrip where a private plane will fly you back to Nairobi (approx. 1 hours). Transfer to the House of Waine, a small colonial hotel located in the quiet suburb of Karen. This elegant 11–roomed private house has a comfortable sitting room and dining room and conservatory over looking the gardens and swimming pool. Lunch in the hotel. This afternoon can be spent relaxing around the pool, or indulging in a little retail therapy or culture - the Utamaduni Craft Centre and Karen Blixen Coffee Gardens and Museum are very close by. Your farewell dinner will be in one of Nairobi’s top restaurants.
