Everest Basecamp (5,456m)

Kala Pattar (5,545m) & Everest Basecamp (5,456m) : Nepal / The Himalaya

1 – 24 November 2009

Day 1 Evening departure from London Heathrow.
Day 2 Arrival in Kathmandu 1,325m. Transfer to your hotel in central Kathmandu. Dinner in the hotel.
Day 3 Breakfast in the hotel. Trek briefing session and check of personal gear with Dave Green and the local trekking agent. A clean set of gear can be stored either in the hotel or with the trekking agent, for your return after the trek. Afternoon walking tour of Kathmandu, commencing at the Swayambhunath Temple (Monkey Temple) and including Durbar Square with its Royal Palace and temples. Dinner in a local restaurant.
Day 4 Breakfast in the hotel. Fly to Lukla 2,830m. With your full complement of local guides and porters, commence the trek into the Khumbu Himal. It is an easy and short walk to the teahouse in Phakding (2,640m / 2 – 3 hours).
Day 5 Continue walking up the winding valley and into Everest National Park, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. (Register at the gates.) There are many exciting footbridges to cross today before reaching Namche Bazaar (3,440m / 5 – 6 hours). Overnight in a teahouse.
Day 6 Rest day in Namche Bazaar. The best method for acclimatisation is to climb high and sleep low – so it is recommended to take a short optional trek to gain a little extra altitude (3,650m / 2 hours). Return to Namche Bazaar.
Day 7 It is a steep short climb to Khunde (3,840m / 2 hours).The Himalayan Trust school and hospital, which was established by Sir Edmund Hilary to provide services for the sherpas, is in Khunde. Overnight in a teahouse.
Day 8 Walk through birch and rhododendron forests to the monastery at Thyangboche and on to Debouche. (3,820m / 6 – 7 hours). Overnight in a teahouse.
Day 9 Break out above the tree line and over 4,000m, with splendid views of Everest, Lhotsi and Lhotsi Shar. Take a steady pace to Dingboche (4,412m / 7 hours).
Day 10 Rest day at Dingboche. An optional hike up the hill behind Dingboche will be offered for extra acclimatisation. Overnight Dingboche.
Day 11 Enter the remote high altitude area of the Khumbu Himal today, which is normally only accessible during October and November and March and April.Walk beneath the massive bulk of Mt Everest and Lhotsi and alongside the terminal moraine of the great Khumbu Glacier. It’s a steep ascent to Lobuche rewarded with impressive views (4,887m / 5-6 hours). Overnight in a teahouse.
Day 12 The higher altitude today will ensure it’s a slow and steady pace to Kala Pattar (5,545m), the highest point on this expedition. Kala Pattar offers an excellent view across to Everest. Continue on to Gorak Shep teahouse (5,104m / 6 – 7 hours).
Day 13 Set off from Gorak Shep, crossing the Khumbu Glacier and take your first steps on Mount Everest and walk to Base Camp (5,456m). Respect is requested if any expeditions are in camp. Return to Gorek Shep teahouse. (3 – 5 hours).
Day 14 Descend to Lobuche (4,887m / 7hours). Overnight in a teahouse.
Day 15 Continue on down the valley to Pheriche (4,240m / 2 – 3 hours). Overnight in a teahouse.
Day 16 Walk to Pangboche or Debouche (3,985m or 3,820m / 3 – 4 hours). Overnight in a teahouse.
Day 17 Walk to Namche Bazaar (3,440m / 5 – 6 hours). Overnight in a teahouse.
Day 18 Head back to the green fertile valleys and Phakding (2,640m / 3 hours). Overnight in a teahouse.
Day 19 Walk to Lukla (2,830m / 2 – 3 hours). Overnight in a teahouse.
Day 20 Fly to Kathmandu. Return to your hotel in Kathmandu. Dinner in a local restaurant.
Day 21 Contingency day in case adverse weather conditions meant a longer stay in the Khumbu Himal. Otherwise a day at leisure in Kathmandu. Dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 22 Breakfast in the hotel. Day at leisure in Kathmandu. Dinner in a local restaurant. Transfer to the airport.
Day 23 Depart Kathmandu.
Day 24 Arrive London Heathrow.

£2,595 per person, all-inclusive except for lunches in Kathmandu.
