Havana
Accommodation
An historical hotel (1908) located on the outskirts of Old Havana. The Sevilla is a ‘grand dame’ – a mix of extravagant grandeur and former state austerity. It featured in Graham Greene‘s novel Our Man in Havana as the location where the protagonist joins the British secret service. Whilst the Sevilla is a large property with 178 rooms on 9 floors, its proximity to Vieja (old town), its street-level pool surrounded by palms and its roof top restaurant offering fabulous views across the city, makes it ideal.
Peter Brown is a member of the NEAC and in 2006 became the first Artist in Residence at the Savoy Hotel, London. In 2008 he won the Prince of Wales Award for Portrait Drawing. Popularly known as “Pete the Street” from his practice of working on location in all weathers, he has developed a vigorous en plein air style, and happily interacts with passers-by and fellow students while at work. He is best known for his detailed and atmospheric depictions of street scenes in cities in the UK, Europe and India. Publications include My Indian Travels and Brown’s Bath and Oil Sketches, APV DVD.
Painting programme and general organisation
It has long been an ambition of Peter’s to paint in Old Havana before it changes forever. This painting holiday is ideal for experienced and intermediate students who aspire to achieving a very exciting and different portfolio of work. Students who travelled to Arles, Florence and Vietnam with Peter had a wonderful adventure capturing every corner of these towns, producing lots of work and learning much from him, so you can expect the same on this holiday. Peter is a humorous, enthusiastic and inspirational guest artist.
Peter will be working in oil but all mediums are welcome. He will encourage you to learn by example and provide guidance when needed. Tuition, demonstrations and critiques will not be provided. Peter starts each day early to capture the best light and works until the sunsets and may even do some twilight and night painting. On a typical day Peter is up and out painting by 0530 hours. He returns to the hotel for breakfast and to reconvene with everyone before heading out again until another meet up at around 1600 hours, to tell everyone where he’ll be working next. This enables you to choose to work alongside him or if you prefer to paint independently or with other students in the party. Everyone meets for dinner, which is an ideal time to get know you Peter. A travel escort from the UK will be looking after you and will take care of all the arrangements, enabling all students and Peter to focus on painting.
